Readers,
Last week, we kicked off the first of many WFHishNYC media gatherings—and if the energy in the room and early feedback are any indication, we might just be onto the best media mixers of the year (so far).
Over the years, I’ve been to nearly every kind of media event in NYC—from black-tie galas packed with bold names to gritty freelancer meetups and hyper-niche gatherings of PR pros and influencers. WFHishNYC strived to do something different.
We brought together a dynamic mix from across the media world including scrappy freelance writers, network anchors, podcast producers, PR execs, marketers, and content creators. It was incredible. We even attracted big names I wasn’t expecting—major influencers and network news anchors among them.
The shared connection was our mutual love for storytelling given what that means for a travel influencer and a political reporter mean something VERY very different.
But the nature of this event was designed to get us out of our silos. A lot of organized events in NYC ranging from dating mixers to professional networking nights—tend to feel transactional. Frankly that’s kind of icky to me. We wanted to challenge that framework and create something rooted in shared interest, where people can connect in whatever way makes sense for them.
In true WFHishNYC fashion, a handful of our attendees (myself included) used the space as their workplace for the day and when the happy hour started — laptops shut.
Found a new colleague? Awesome! Gabbed about the state of the media with a stranger? That’s cool too. Met a new friend? That’s even better!
At the end of the day, regardless of where we are in life, and what our goals are, we all want connection. That’s exactly how this unfolded. A few of us continued the party at a friend’s rooftop nearby after the venue closed up. We had to finish those leftover drinks donated by Kin Euphorics and Talea Brewing somehow. Of course thanks to Meredith, the author of Meredith and the Media and the former head of communications for Pinterest; for the tacos!
Now that's a real connection is built. There will be more to come for sure. Watch this space.
If you want to build an event for your industry, WFHishNYC as well as our partners with fluxo or Seven 24 Collective can facilitate that for you. Please get in touch.
