Review: The Center For Fiction - Fort Greene
Plus more info About Our Event Wednesday and a closure to report
Hey Readers,
This week, we have a review that I am very excited about: The Center for Fiction in Fort Greene. But before we get to that, here are a few quick news items you should know.
First, some unfortunate news — we’ve learned that Dweebs, one of my favorite places in Bushwick, is closing this Wednesday. The café was one of the first places I reviewed for WFHishNYC and where I originally came up with the idea for this guide. Their last day will be April 30th.
Also, a quick reminder: our second WFHish Wednesday collaboration is happening this Wednesday at Brooklyn Art Haus! It’s shaping up to be a fantastic event. During the day, you can book a workspace through the Fluxo app and work onsite all day. They’re even hosting a plant workshop for when you need a break from the grind. Stick around for the happy hour, which runs until 7 PM — enjoy some cocktails and a special collaboration with an awesome liquor brand (intrigued? You’ll have to show up to find out more!).
If you can’t make it for the workday but can swing by for happy hour, that’s great too. We’d love to connect — and if you have the fluxo app and are signed up for this newsletter, your first drink is on us! We'll still be hanging out after 7, of course, but drinks will no longer be part of the happy hour deal after that.
If you can’t make the workday and only the after hours events please RSVP on the Partiful.
With all that said, let’s get to this week’s review.
Today, we’re in Fort Greene, checking out a spot that’s been on my list for a long time — The Center for Fiction. Thanks to a nudge from a new friend of mine, Emily, now was the perfect time to finally do this review, and I’m so glad I did. This place is part bookstore, part event space, part co-working space, café, bar, library, and private membership writers' studio. For today's visit, I checked out the café.
Neighborhood: Fort Greene
Address: 15 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217
Seating:
Four community tables that seat eight people each
Eight tables for three people
Two tables for two people with stool-style seating
Plugs:
There are a handful of outlets hidden in the bookshelves — I found about four. Plug space isn’t this place’s strong suit.
Wi-Fi:
The Wi-Fi comes with a three-hour limit with a café purchase, but it offers unlimited download and upload speeds.
Bathroom:
Yes
Food:
A variety of pastries and sandwiches, along with a fairly standard selection of coffees and teas. There’s also a bar that serves a selection of alcohol.
Noise Level:
It can get a little noisy. The café area has very high ceilings (at least two stories), and it's part of a larger event space that transitions into a theater. Conversations and meetings carry easily. The background music is pleasant, but if you need a truly quiet work environment, this might not be the best spot.
Lighting:
There’s plenty of natural light thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as overhead lighting.
Overall:
I highly recommend The Center for Fiction. It’s large, spacious, and welcoming to all kinds of people. Just be aware that plugs are limited and the space can get a bit noisy. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic option for working, reading, or just hanging out.
