THE COFFEE BREAK: Jason Diamond
I sat down with the writer at one his favorite coffeeshops in Prospect Heights
If you are a keen observer of the New York media scene you’ve probably at least heard his name — Jason Diamond.
The writer appeared in GQ, The New York Times, Esquire, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and many other notable publications.
The author of numerous books, he’s now working on one with notable New York social media icon New York Nico. He spent several years in various editor roles including at Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, and InsideHook (where I met him).
“I’ve never wanted to write about just one thing. I have so many different interests,” Diamond tells WFHish.
“I’ve had offers for staff writer positions but I am worried about being siloed.”
He says he didn’t want his own beat. He wants to have more control over what he writes.
It’s no secret that the media industry is in flux.
Like a ball of clay, it can drastically change size and shape in an instant with even just a little nudge— more often than not by C-suite executives devoid of a much more than elementary understanding of the role that press plays.
Increasingly writers want what Diamond has — control over your own editorial identity.
“I think at this point enough people click on something because I wrote it, but that wasn’t always the case,” Diamond adds.
Originally from Chicago, like many he moved here to follow a dream. Now he calls Brooklyn home.
For coffeeshops to remote work at Diamond recommends:
Nurush: 637 Washington Ave. Brooklyn (Prospect Heights)
Think Coffee (Mercer Location Near Washington Square Park): 248 Mercer
Hungarian Pastry: (Great to work as long as your not on your laptop): 1030 Amsterdam Ave (Morningside Heights)
R&D Foods: 602 Vanderbilt Avenue
