ACE HOTEL (MIDTOWN)
Ace Hotel
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown
ADDRESS: 20 W 29th St, New York, NY 10001
NEW YORKER TRANSLATION: 29th between 5th and broadway
SEATING: There’s so many options. There are tons of couches and chairs both in the front and the back of the lobby. The more loungy options are separated by a large community table. There are also several two person high tables with stools.
PLUG SITUATION: There are a few plugs underneath the community table but not all of them work. There are plugs next to some of the columns. In my experience those can be hard to find.
WIFI: It works well. I’ve been able to upload a video easily without any delays. I’ve used it in the lobby several times. When the internet works— it works well. With this place though, it can be a gamble. It seems to be down A LOT in my experience.
BATHROOM SITUATION: There are a handful of single person bathrooms towards the back of the establishment near the bar.
NOISE LEVEL: This place can get fairly noisy. With high ceilings — sound travels. The music can get pretty loud too. If you thrive in quiet spaces, this may not be the place for you.
LIGHTING: It’s fairly dark. It has an intimate evening bar feel to it in that respect. That makes sense because it also happens to be a bar.
FOOD: This is an amazing spot. I’ve been here a few times. There’s nothing quite like a fried chicken sandwich while you’re working. One time, with my friend Rebecca, we had a Charcuterie board. There is a stumptown coffee location in the front of the hotel.
OVERALL: The lobby of this space is a remote workers paradise.
Rosetta (UPPER WEST SIDE)
NEIGHBORHOOD: UWS - Lincoln Center
ADDRESS: 1928 Broadway
NEW YORKER TRANSLATION: Broadway between 64th and 65th
SEATING: It’s abundant. There are couch style seats along one wall, plush chairs along another and tons of tables!! They’re high top stool tables though. There are also stools along the window facing the street. Also, there’s seating outside.
PLUG SITUATION: This is NOT this place’s strong suit. There are only a few across the entire establishment.
WIFI: It’s pretty fast and reliable. No problems.
BATHROOM SITUATION: clean.
NOISE LEVEL: It’s loud. If that’s not your thing, don’t come here.
LIGHTING: Overhead fluorescent lighting but this place mostly relies on the natural light from the floor to ceiling windows overlooking Broadway and Lincoln Center.
FOOD: Great coffee! Their pastries are out of this world. They’ve got everything from Cannolis to Danish. They’re so tempting. The place also has pizza and sandwiches but I am not sure those are worth it especially for the price tag.
OVERALL: This place is a great option as long as you don’t mind it loud and have fully charged devices.
T/CO Cafeteria (Bushwick)
NEIGHBORHOOD: Bushwick
ADDRESS: 151 Wilson Ave. Brooklyn N.Y. 11237
NEW YORKER TRANSLATION: Wilson and Suydam in Bushwick
SEATING: There are four tables inside. Three of them are along the wall. They seat four people each.
There is also a table facing the window that sits six. There are four tables at the bar. There are a few seats outside on Wilson.
PLUG SITUATION: It’s great IF you get the middle table. There is one outlet with a power strip. Otherwise, it’s slim pickins.
WIFI: It works well. I was able to download, upload and write comfortably.
BATHROOM SITUATION: One single occupancy all gender bathroom with no code.
NOISE LEVEL: It’s comfortable. It’s relatively quiet with some background music.
LIGHTING: The large windows upfront do wonders. The natural light is inspiring.
FOOD: It’s alright. I had lunch when I went there. I got the steak salad. Everything about the salad was great minus the steak… It was overcooked and flavorless. The artichoke palms and oranges helped elevate it through. The coffee is great. No complaints on the decaf latte.
OVERALL: This is a fairly solid option. Plug situation can be tough if you don’t get the right seat and don’t order the steak. Otherwise, enjoy yourself.
PT Knitwear (Lower East Side)
PT Knitwear
NEIGHBORHOOD: Lower East Side
ADDRESS: 180 Orchard Street
PLUG SITUATION: There are quite a few. There is a power cord near the two tables in the little nook. There are also plugs along the stadium seating set up.
SEATING: Two tables in front of a stadium seating style nook. On top there are a handful of other tables. There are also three bar stools next to the coffeeshop within the bookstore
WIFI: Works well. No complaints
BATHROOM SITUATION: They have one in the back.
NOISE LEVEL: It’s frankly pretty quiet. The music level is fine and people are relatively quiet. It’s a good place to get some work done.
LIGHTING: There is a lot of natural light as well as fluorescent lighting
FOOD: Not this place’s strong suit. The coffee is phenomenal but the pastry options are sparse. There are some cookies and muffins.
OVERALL: This place is great. It’s quiet and has a bookstore and podcast studio inside too. The food aspect is not this places strong suit.
The Coffee Break: Jeremy Asgari
Creator of Outsiders
Meet Jeremy Asgari. He's the founder of Outsiders— the local group that helps people get out of the city, get active and experience nature. For the second edition of the Coffee Break I gotta sit down with him at the exclusive club Ludlow House.
The hustle and bustle of New York City can be exhausting. Of course, the fast pace and its inspiring vibrant culture is why we live here. For Asgari, that was a driving factor why he started the group Outsiders.
If you are not familiar with the group they take hikes, bike rides and all other kinds of active activities within a couple hours of New York City although they do have some awesome travel trips.
Personally, I’ve been meaning to jump on one of those.
His project embraces a key frustration that many New Yorkers have — why when you meet up with friends or loved ones often it's for drinks, dinner, coffee (oops) or some kind of other consumeristic and honestly, sometimes, super expensive.
Unfortunately for many of us, more often than not, the status of our wallets are a major barrier to entry if we can have a great time or not (depending on your choice company of course)
Asgari spent years working in a space that is the embodiment of consumerism and spending while having so much fun —nightlife!
In part that’s why’s been able to build a group with such a large following.
He now works full time running the program and hires hundreds of part timers to help run the trips. He often does this from a variety of coffee shops (although he doesn’t drink coffee) or the social club he belongs to.
